Kiwi House Self-Guided Tour

The Otorohanga Kiwi House is a non-profit charity dedicated to conservation and breeding of New Zealands most rare and endangered species since 1971. The centre also rescues and rehabilitates NZ natives and provides whole of life care for those unable to be released back to the wild.

Opportunities for viewing of New Zealands national bird, the Kiwi, in specialised nocturnal enclosures. Self-guided walk through huge walk-through free-flight aviary, ponds & wetland areas in peaceful park-like grounds with a large range of New Zealand native plants Wonderful range of New Zealand native birds and reptiles including tuatara, which pre-dated the dinosaurs.

Family-friendly and suitable for all ages. Photography welcome (except within nocturnal houses due to kiwi light sensitivity)

Free-Wifi available, Ample Parking on site, Tickets open for two days (both the day of purchase and the next consecutive day). N.B. there is limited cover in the park during wet weather, so groups need to be dressed appropriately.

  • There are a number of birds such as pukeko and spur-winged plover that range freely round the park. Visitors need to be aware that birds may land on visitors heads or shoulders. All animals may bite if approached.

Instructions
  • Photography and video are welcome except within nocturnal houses. Kiwi are extremely sensitive to light and sound so please remind groups video/cameras, lphones/pointers or any other light sources are not permitted in the nocturnal houses. Please also ask visitors to limit their noise in these spaces. Allow 5-10 minutes for visitors eyes to adjust to nocturnal houses when viewing kiw
